There is empirical evidence that having a few well-chosen keywords in your URL can help your rankings.

This is obviously debatable. Some SEOs theorize that other SEO’s are the ones who create websites with keywords in the domain name. Therefore, the ranking boost is not really from having a keyword-rich URL, but rather from a combination of all the things an SEO normally does to help a website rank well.

It don’t think it’s worth arguing about. I’ll take any slight advantage I can get. Especially, if it’s by doing something that doesn’t have any potential to cause harm.

Besides, having keywords in your domain name most definitely helps with clickability. Searched for keyword terms will appear bolded in the SERPs. Yes, even those in the URL. This attracts the searcher’s attention and impresses them with the relevance of the result to their query. It’s also much more user friendly to have a descriptive term in the file name than a jumble of symbols and numbers.

If you were searching for “orlando condo”, for example, which URL appeals more to you: www.moremouse.default.asp?page=results&type=3 or www.orlando.condo.com ?

But the biggest boost from having keywords in your URL is that when others link to you using your domain name, they are conveying good link reputation to the pages of your website, which can be very powerful. This reason alone is enough to make me covet URLs with keywords in them.

One other possible benefit is from searchers who guess at a URL by typing “www+keywordcombination” directly into the address bar of a browser. If the address is yours, they’ll land on your website and you’ll gain that traffice by your URL alone.
